UTM on the click
See which utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign values arrived on the short URL itself: click-time UTM, not the tags saved on the link.
Reviewed 24 Oct 2026Available from the Pro plan
Two UTM grains
The Campaigns panel, in its Tagged on the link mode, groups clicks by the UTM values you saved on each link. UTM on the click groups the same clicks by the utm_ parameters that were on the short URL when the visitor opened it. They answer different questions and are not merged.
From this date forward
What is stored
When someone opens a short link, ShortZen reads utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, and utm_term from that request. Empty values are ignored. The first three appear as ranked lists on Analytics. Content and term are stored on the click but are not rolled up in this view.

For: Whoever is comparing channels
Before you start
- A Pro or Business workspace.
- A short link you can open with utm_source, utm_medium, or utm_campaign on the URL.
Steps
Open a short link and add utm_source and utm_campaign to the address.
The destination still opens. The click is recorded with those values.
Wait a minute, then open Analytics and scroll to UTM on the click.
The campaign and source you passed appear as their own rows, separate from the links' saved tags in Campaigns.
What you should see
A ranked list of click-time UTM values that matches the query string on the short URL, not the tags saved on the link.
How to check it worked
- UTM on the click shows the values from the short URL.
- Campaigns, in its Tagged on the link mode, is unchanged unless those tags are also saved on the link.
Edge cases
- The short URL has no utm_ parameters.
- The click is stored without click-time UTM. The panel stays empty until a tagged short URL is opened.
If something goes wrong
- The panel is empty after a test click.
- Confirm the utm_ parameters were on the short URL, not only on the destination. Wait for aggregation (about a minute), then refresh.
Plans
Click-time UTM is on Pro and above, the same fence as referrer breakdown and browser breakdown. Starter still saves UTM tags on the link and still appends them to the destination.
